In this chapter we explore the impact of the presidency on policymaking in Perú during Alan García’s two non-consecutive administrations. After becoming president in 1985 Alan García promised a new direction for Perú. However, by 1987 he had initiated a series of economic reforms that produced arguably the worst economic crisis in modern Peruvian history.
