Since the 1950’s, the Liberal and Conservative parties controlled the electoral arena in Colombia. For more than fifty years, they won the presidency and together held 90 percent of seats in congress. In 2002, they lost for the first time when Alvaro Uribe Vélez –running as an independent-became president.
